Kaskaskia, IL- Bank of Cairo (at Kaskaskia) $3 184_ G18 Proof PMG Uncirculated 62, 4 POCs.

The bank was organized in 1839, based upon an old 1816 charter that had never been activated. Its career was not a long one, with the bank placed in liquidation in early February, 1843. The $3 design features a vignette of a busy harbor scene flanked by two oval cameo-like medallion heads. Two end panels contain a vignette of a herd of cattle (at left) and a portrait of Washington (at right). The note is printed on India paper mounted on card with four small POCs in the signature lines. PMG mentions previous mounting evidence on the card which has no impact on the note itself. There was one example in the 1990 ABNCo Archives sale, and Haxby was aware of this design prior to the sale when he listed and illustrated this design in Proof form in his 1988 catalog. We are aware of a small handful of examples of this design.
