1852-O Eagle - No Motto $10 NGC AU55
1852-O Liberty Eagle, AU55
Undervalued Branch Mint Rarity
1852-O $10 AU55 NGC. Variety 1. Production of eagles dropped precipitously at the New Orleans Mint in 1852, to a meager 18,000 pieces. The entire mintage was released into circulation and few examples were saved for numismatic purposes. The coins circulated heavily in the regional economy for decades before interest in branch mint issues in general, and high denomination gold coins in particular, created collector demand for high-quality specimens. As might be expected, the 1852-O is a rare issue in AU55 condition, and Mint State examples are virtually unobtainable.
This attractive Choice AU example exhibits just a touch of wear on the well-detailed design elements and the lightly abraded orange-gold surfaces retain traces of original mint luster in sheltered areas. The overall presentation is most attractive for this rare branch mint issue. Census: 29 in 55 (1 in 55+★ ), 13 finer (7/24).(Registry values: N2998)
