South Carolina February 8, 1779 $80 Fr. SC-157 PMG Choice About Uncirculated 58 EPQ. Stunning $80 Coram Note; Finest PMG Graded

A broadly margined and vibrant $80 Thomas Coram-engraved note. Exceptional condition and the top-population example at PMG. A shade away from "as made" for the type. It boasts an impressive pedigree of Colonial note luminaries, hailing back well over 100 years. Printed on bluish-cream paper. A classically garbed man standing next to a flame holds out his sword; the motto is CONSTANTIA DURISSIMA VINCIT (The firmest constancy will conquer). The back has an oval 13-star shield flanked by horns, branches, and spears, topped by a Liberty cap in a glory. As we have discussed here, all strictly Uncirculated notes are difficult to find from this series. Any handling is minimalist. The margins are complete on the face, ample in fact. The back to face registration centering is nearly perfect. Much superior to the Newman Collection note we sold for $2,400 in November 2017. Years of searching and unlimited financial ability may not procure a note to even match this example. An important opportunity. This lot was purchased out of our FUN 2015 auction as lot 19108 for $5,405. Previously, it appeared in the Part XV auction of the John J. Ford, Jr. Collection held on October 4, 2006 as lot 8766 where it realized $4,025. Earlier, Ford obtained it from the F. C. C. Boyd Estate. The previous two owners before Boyd were T. James Clarke and Henry Chapman. Not currently for sale.
