Macon, GA- Commercial Bank at Macon $100 Oct. 15, 1845 G18 PMG Very Fine 25.
The bank was chartered in 1831 and remained in business until 1846 when it failed. The $100 design features a portrait of Washington flanked by oval 100 counters. An allegorical woman, perhaps representing Knowledge, appears at left with a torch and book, while a vignette of two sailing vessels is at right. PMG notes minor ink erosion and tears that have minimal impact on this rare note's desirability. At present, we are aware of three or four surviving examples.
